New commodity codes in the EU in 2020
The EU updated the list of CN codes for customs and intra-EU purposes in 2020
The European Union updated the latest list of CN codes applicable for customs and intra-EU purposes in 2020. CN codes are individual numbers that identify a type of good. They are organized in categories (CN chapters) and subcategories according to the type of goods described.
In 2020, the following CN chapters are updated: 19, 22, 27, 37, 39, 71, 73, 84, 85 and 90. In some instances, only the digits are updated whereas some updates also include a new description of the corresponding CN code. Some CN codes were split into two different codes, hence cancelling the previously applied classification.
You can access and download the Commission Implementing Regulation introducing these changes from the website of the European Commission.
Normally, CN goods are used in customs documentation when importing or exporting goods. They are also required in Intrastat returns. It is important that businesses update their CN database to make sure that they include the latest applicable CN list. You may also check specifically if the changes introduced in 2020 apply directly to your business.
